Yoko Ono: Speaking Out on Acting Her Age
By Gary Geyer There was a time that just about everything Yoko said or did was controversial * or offended somebody. Apparently that still holds true. A few years back, New York Magazine ran their ?Spring Fashion? issue. In it were some photographs of Yoko Ono with a caption that read, ?The Surprisingly Sexy Septuagenarian? One of the photos featured Yoko in, what used to be called, hot-pants. A letter was written to a columnist for Canada?s Globe and Mail by a woman who signed it, ?Bewildered Bette.? America Reads-Mississippi AmeriCorps Member is Impacting Children Nationwide by Thinking, Acting Locally
Mission Hills, CA (PRWEB) September 8, 2006 -- America Learns announced today that a tutoring strategy created by America Reads – Mississippi member Sherry Martin has been named September’s National Strategy of the Month. Throughout September, Sherry’s strategy will be available for free to thousands of teachers, tutors, mentors and parents nationwide through the America Learns website and monthly e-newsletter.
Sherry created her strategy after finding that some of her students were failing to recognize the letters of the alphabet through traditional teaching techniques. Her strategy, called “Nice to Meet you, Mr./Ms. Letter,” engages preschool and Kindergarten students in a group activity that gets the kids up and moving while making the lesson feel more like a game than a learning activity.
“Sherry is an incredible tutor,” said Dr. Helen J. Wyatt, Regional Director, Alcorn State University America Reads-Mississippi region. “She tries different approaches to meet the needs of the students she tutors. Her enthusiasm rubs off on her students. Sherry will make a great teacher one day because she really cares about her students and their learning.”
“The AmeriCorps members we have the opportunity to serve nationwide continue to wow and inspire us daily,” said Gary Kosman, Founder and CEO, America Learns. “Sherry’s dedication to thinking and acting locally is now helping students we reach nationwide develop the knowledge and skills needed for reading success.”
Sherry’s strategy may be accessed for the remainder of September at http://americalearns.net/strategy.htm, and will be permanently available to all America Learns Network members.
